To all Racers, Crew and Supporters
With Meremere Dragway Inc’s (MDI) change of sanctioning supplier to the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), we hope to clarify any queries regarding the costs, compliance and regulations associated with MDI joining IHRA in the following statement. Every care has been taken to reduce disruption and ensure a smooth transition for all Racers.
To obtain an IHRA licence when you have a current Drag Racing licence you must fill out 2 forms, photo copy your existing Drag Racing licence and civil drivers licence. The paperwork can then be signed off by a Track/IHRA official, faxed or scanned and emailed direct to IHRA. Medical certificates are only needed for Group One drivers; your current medical if not expired will carry through to your IHRA licence.
The cost for an IHRA licence is as follows:
- Slower than 11 seconds; no licence needed.
- Junior Dragster $40 for 1 year.
- Bikes and Cars currently classified under Super Street, Super Sedan, Mod Bike, Screamin’ Eagle, Comp Bike, Sport Compact, Top Street, Super Gas, Supercharged Outlaw, Modified and Competition = ET Bracket License $60 for 1 year, $105 for 2 years and $155 for 3 years.
- Top Doorslammer and Top Alcohol (Group One) classified vehicles = Top Sportsman/Dragster $70 one year, $125 two years and $185 for 3 years. All racers can also get a one year subscription to Drag Review Magazine for $75 postage.
These prices are in US dollars, if you do not have a credit card, you can pay MDI and we will process and send your licence to IHRA on your behalf. You will receive email confirmation of the receipt of your licence application within 2 business days. Forms will be available from the track or can be downloaded from either IHRA or the tracks web site.
MDI are working on a rule book which you will be able to download from our web site, free of charge. The rule book will be very similar to the current NZ rule book. All classes, weights, overdrives etc will be the same. All safety, SFI regulations will be the same. If your race car or bike is legal with the current NZ rules it will be legal with the rules IHRA are running in New Zealand.
For vehicle compliance, there are a few current tech inspectors now on board to process inspections to the current organisation or to IHRA, it is your decision. Tech costs are the same. Your tech sheet and $20 dollars are to be sent to an IHRA representative in NZ and a log book will be issued and sent back to you.
Please contact the following Tech Inspectors for tech inspection:
Chris Johnson - Pukekohe 0274 782767
Greg (Flathead) Leach – Auckland 0274 409296
Ian Hilder – Bikes only Auckland 021 932174
Gavin Oram – Auckland 021 02204163
Richard McCarthy – New Plymonth 0274 934014
Colin Welch – Wellington 04 5288774
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE YOU BIKE OR CAR TO COMPLY.
We also have the pleasure of announcing that Paul Burns has been appointed as our independent Area Steward to oversee rulings and race related incidences much as he does now. Part of this role includes the administering of Log Books.
MDI has always had its own motorsport public liability insurance which covers all track users whether you have an IHRA, NHRA, NZDRA, ANDRA, MANZ or civil drivers licence. Nothing has changed in this regard, WE AND YOU ARE COVERED.
MDI is committed to bringing you, the racer, a full calendar of race events. We will honour your Drag Racing licence regardless of the governing body. YOU DON’T NEED TWO LICENCES AND YOU WILL NOT BE TURNED AWAY.
With MDI committed to make Fram Autolite Dragway the best place to race and to keep it the safest place we have let out the contract to finish the concrete safety barriers on lane one. Pouring of the moulds will start in a couple of weeks and all barriers will be in place before the 2011/2012 season starts.
We have always been committed to safety and the improvement of our facility. This change of affiliation offers us the additional funds to help assist in achieving these goals. We know we are in for some changing times and would ask for your support in ensuring that Meremere remains the premier drag racing facility in New Zealand.
We welcome your feedback – please feel free to call Gary Bogaart – Manager (0274 056060) to discuss any issues or concerns you may have. Alternatively, we will be holding a Drivers Meeting on Sunday 10th July 2011 at 3pm at the Pukekohe Hot Rod Club to answer any further queries you may have. You are all welcome to attend.
